| Trauma/Abuse

Exposure to war, violence, childhood
abuse, natural disaster, or even a life threatening car accident
can sometimes result in longer term mental health issues in
some individuals. The common responses associated with living
through a traumatic or abusive event vary from person to person,
but may include: heightened anxiety, confusion, relationship
conflict, lingering depression, nausea, dizziness, and changes
in appetite and sleep pattern as well as withdrawal from daily
activities. Responses to trauma can last for weeks to months
before people start to feel normal again.
How therapy can help:
- Offers
a safe space to talk about the traumatic event
- Help identify and
express feelings related to the event
- Help develop effective
self-soothing techniques to aid symptom relief
- Normalizes the sometimes
odd array of symptoms and responses to trauma
- Help address and
repair relationship conflict that may arise after trauma
- Help address low-self
esteem that may result from childhood exposure to violence
