Chronic health issues/HIV

I have over 15 years of experience working in the field of HIV prevention and care. Although medical advances and access to powerfully effective medications have turned HIV from devastating to manageable for many in the US, continued social and community stigma and the stress of coping with any long-term health condition can take a toll on relationships and self-esteem.

Individuals with other chronic health issues such as chronic fatigue syndrome, autoimmune diseases, and chronic pain disorder, may experience similar challenges to their mental health well-being.

How therapy can help:

  • Support the exploration of self-esteem following new diagnosis
Help integrate health issues into your life without them taking over
  • Help increase comfort in talking to loved ones about your health
  • Help with relationship conflict that may arise as a result of coping with illness – symptomatic or not
  • Help couples and individuals identify and maintain sexual boundaries and safety agreements
  • Address co-morbid depression, unexpressed grief, and/or anxiety that may accompany long-term survival with HIV and other chronic illnesses
